Ever since the club's demise in 2006, CBGB seems to be going stronger than ever. Today, organizers announced the line-up for the second annual CBGB Music & Film Festival, and once again there will be a free concert held in Times Square on October 12th featuring performances by My Morning Jacket, Grizzly Bear, and a DJ set by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy.
The entire festival kicks off October 8th with the premiere of the CBGB Movie. The biopic stars Die Hard-bad guy Alan Rickman as the club's founder Hilly Kristal, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins as Iggy Pop, and actress Malin Ackerman (Children's Hospital, Wanderlust) as Blondie's Debbie Harry.
Following the premiere of the film, the festival is officially started with over 700 bands playing 175 different venues around Manhattan and Brooklyn over the six-day festival from Oct. 8th - 13th. In addition to the Oct. 12th free concert, the festival will feature performances from The Wallflowers, The Meat Puppets, Spank Rock, Amanda Blank, Atlas Genius, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Lisa Loeb, Bell X1, Dirty Finger, and literally hundreds more. As this small sampling shows, the festival is embracing all genres from punk to pop, hardcore, EDM, experimental, country, and everything in-between.
In addition to the music, 40 new "music-themed" films will be premiered at the festival with 100 screenings. Each film's premiere will follow with a Q & A session featuring the film's director, producer, and sometimes the cast.
According to the press release, "there are a number of ways to participate in the CBGB Festival." For ticket information and more details about the festival, visit cbgb.com.
