Just around the corner from Charleston's chic middle King St. shopping district, Caviar & Bananas serves up an astounding array of culinary delights you can enjoy eat-in or take out. Co-owner Kris Furniss calls it a "non-intimidating shopping environment", but it's a lot more than that: C&B is a gourmet food lovers' paradise.
A combination gourmet market, cafe and coffee bar (with a superb House Blend), C&B features (as Kris says) "everything from the ordinary to the extraordinary": fresh baked goods, sandwiches, salads, top-shelf prepared foods, wines, beers and juices, charcuterie, cheeses, candies, inventive made-to-order sushi and much more in colorful and irresistible open-floor displays.
One associate told this reviewer that she had a hard time not spending her entire paycheck in C&B, and it's not hard to see why. The deli-case display of prepared foods alone is enough to rope in the pocketbook of a dedicated foodie. Yet C&B's prices across the board are a pleasant surprise, and the range of goodies is so extensive you can indulge yourself guilt-free. You'll be hard pressed to find higher quality at such reasonable prices elsewhere in the neighborhood.
Be sure to pick up the Gift Ideas brochure with its tantalizing theme-based gift baskets, such as "Afternoon Bliss" (C&B coffees), "For the Entertainer" (cheeses, tapenade, olives, cookies, champagne), "The Health Nut" (raw fruit and natural ingredient snacks), to name just a few. Many items are SC low country, Charleston and C&B-label specialities. C&B also provides catering, private cooking classes and tastings.
Caviar & Bananas has been at its 51 George St. (between King and St. Philip) location for two years, and here's hoping they'll be there for many more. They are open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and will even validate parking for a nearby garage. The phone number is 843-577-7757, and the website is caviarand bananas.com. Enjoy!
