There has been widespread and growing interest in costume play - “cosplay” throughout the United States, as well as a rich subculture devoted to comic books and fantasy characters, both from the comics and television. Las Vegas even hosts an annual Anime/Cosplay convention: http://www.examiner.com/modeling-in-las-vegas/anime-vegas-convention-day-one
But if much of cosplay is for near-teens, there is still a great deal of interest among adults. Las Vegas, as it turns out, is home to a substantial number of fantasy-character costume designers, body painters, models and “just plain folks” who love to dress up every bit as much as the kids do.
And so it was widely welcomed when two of those designers, Amber Foley and Mina Kahn, partnered with “Cosplay and Comic Diva” Brieanna Brock to create what they intend as a new Las Vegas institution: a charity cosplay fashion show - cosplay for a cause.
The first of several intended events was held at Artifice on September 17th. It showcased the work of 11 designers, three body painters, seven makeup artists and hair stylists and 20 models. Eight promotional models helped at the door, selling raffle tickets and generally adding to the party atmosphere of the event.
In addition to benefiting the two charities (The Center Las Vegas & Spread the Word Nevada), the event was intended to showcase the work of local designers and to be a networking opportunity for the models. Each of them had business cards to pass out to attendees as they circulated through the crowd after the fashion show.
The organizers intend not only to make Cause play an annual event, but to work together to bring a wider variety of showcase, networking and, well, just plain fun events to Las Vegas.
