Cats left out in freezing conditions over the holidays in Winnipeg

Over the 2012 holiday season, Winnipeg residents heard of two shocking stories of cats left to fend for themselves in the extremely cold winter conditions.

One of the cat abandonment stories saw four kittens tied up in a garbage bag, and dumped behind a garbage bin behind a hotel. The kittens, according to officials from Winnipeg Pet Rescue, who rescued them, almost did not make it.

Another story told of kittens left on the side of Highway 59, in a diaper bag. Officials from Craig Street Cats were the ones who brought those kittens and rescued them.

Hearing stories like this is shocking, but it shows how important education is. There is never any reason to abandon a cat, because cat shelters are plentiful in this province. All it takes is a phone call to make the difference between cruel abandonment and compassionate rescue. There is no excuse.
