Cats are finally getting the positive attention that cat owners and lovers crave for the pets of their choice. Ordinarily it is dogs leading the charge with therapy and helping children to learn through reading programs, books and television shows. It is now the cats’ turn to lend a helping paw.
The felines are doing just that with the new Feline Features LLC, a PBS program entitled “Peg + Cat.” This particular program has been designed around the learning needs of preschoolers. It is a math adventure series; teaching the kids through online games and videos.
As stated earlier this week, PBS has been behind in the educational progress of smartphones, tablets and other mobile gadgets. Although they are still tops in popular educational television shows, they feel that the market is trending toward the other markets and they don’t want to be left behind.
To show their willingness for change, PBS launched what they hope will be an Internet sensation. The Department of Education’s Ready to Learn Grant helped PBS to fund their initiative “Peg + Cat.” The hope is that some schools will adopt the series as well.
Younger and younger children are adopting the use of mobile devices and it has been established that this is a popular means of teaching as kids do not mind playing learning games as long as they are able to play on these tiny computers.
In order to stay competitive, companies, even PBS, have to work harder in order to stay popular on all platforms. They need to target their audiences and then fit in where they can in every genre of media. There is some question if PBS Kids will be able to make this transition, so the cats are the first hope to see if kids catch on or not.
PBS was designed around the television experience, not other social media type genres, so this math app, along with the cat, take public broadcasting into the direction that they need to head in order to stay stable in the marketplace. While the wheelers and dealers for PBS work out all of these details, the cat lovers will be hoping for this Internet program to be a hit so that cats are put into a more positive light.
The feline + Peg will make or break their chances to compete against corporate giants in this market. Cat aficionados believe that it will work. Stay tuned and tune your kids in. Help PBS reign in the online market from here on out!
