In the early days of Louisville, Captain John Donne came to Louisville He brought with him the first known slave in Louisville; Cato Watts. As part of the George Rogers Clark expedition, Watts is considered the first African-American to set foot on the Falls of the Ohio. Little is known about Watts, his exact birth date and time of death are unknown.
Captain Donne and his family were among the first settlers on Corn Island, which would later grow into the city of Louisville.Some time in the 1780s Donne died under suspicious circumstances. While Watts claimed the death was an accident, he was charged with murder. Sometime later he was hanged.
