No. 8 Catholic University (26-1) host the Cabrini Cavaliers (24-3) at DuFour Center to face in the opening round of the NCAA Div. III women’s basketball tournament. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm, March 1, as the second game of the night.
Widener (21-5) will face FDU-Florham (22-3), ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Atlantic region, in the 5:30 p.m. opener.
(Catholic’s men host College of Staten Island in a first round game at 7:30 pm March 2.)
After scoring a career-high 22 points earlier in the week to lead CU to repeat its Landmark Conference title Emily Grabiak was named the Landmark Player of the Week.
The Cardinals, ranked No. 2 in the region, are led by LC Player of the Year Jill Woerner. Woerner, now a three-time First Team selection, was joined on the First Team by classmate Katarina Owunna and Grabiak.
The Cavs leading scorer is Brittany Sandone. She averages 14.8 points per game. Colleen Stewart leads Cabrini in rebounding with 6.8 per game. Amber Keys and Annie Rivituso are right behind her with 6.7.
General ticket sales will open March 1 at 3:30 pm inside the DuFour Center. Advance ticket sales for the women’s second round game (March 2), will be held following the completion of the first game on March 1 until 10 pm.
Saturday entrances will open at 2 pm.
Marymount (23-4) takes to the road March 1 travelling to Christopher Newport University in Newport News for a first round date with Eastern Mennonite (19-5) at 5 pm. Both the Saints and Widener recieved votes from d3hoops.
Katelyn Fischer and Tynisha Parks led Marymount in scoring with 17 and 13 ppg. Parks also contributes 8.6 caroms per game. Miranda Krott grabs nearly 8 boards every contest. The Saints are ranked No. 5 in the Atlantic Division. The Royals are No. 5 in the South Division.
Fischer was named the Capital Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year for the second-straight season. Parks collected second team All-CAC honors. Their coach, Ashlee Courter, earned coach of the year.
The Royals have four players averaging between eight and 10 points per game including Forest Park High alum Shakeerah Sykes (9.9), Bianca Ygarza (9.7), Steph Rheinheimer (9.1) and Raiven Patterson (8). Ygarza and Sykes lead the team in rebounding averaging 7.1 and 6.4 respectively.
The victors will take on either host, and ranked No. 18 nationally by USAToday, Christopher Newport (26-2) or Guilford (23-4) on Saturday at 7 pm in the round of 32.
