The game of Monopoly provides us a way out of jail with a simple flip of a card. For many, Catholic confession is viewed as the same. But they would so very wrong to think that confession is simply about forgiveness--however great forgiveness is!
For Confession (the Sacrament of Reconciliation) is about a Loving relationship, the Father who truly cares, and the Son we become.
"Fear not, my children; call out to God! He who brought this upon you will remember you. As your hearts have been disposed to stray from God, turn now ten times the more to seek him; For he who has brought disaster upon you will, in saving you, bring you back enduring joy.” Baruch 4:5-12, 27-29
Confession, Catholic Sacramental Confession, is truly about the amazing grace which forgives us! But it is so much more. When we stray from God in sin, God the Prodigal Father never gives up on us, and through the grace of the Holy Spirit (convicting us of sin in our conscience), He calls us back in repentance, to confess our sins to His Beloved Son, through the ministry of the priest (in Persona Christi), and we are reunited through sanctifying grace into right relationship with the Holy Trinity.
Wow! So much more than a 'get out of jail free' card there!
"See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! For the LORD hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not." Psalm 69:33-37
Confession is also every prayer answered in God, the Good Shepherd, saving us from all that yearns to kill us. Wolves in sin, and personal weakness, and worldly attraction, seek to seduce us away from the Love of God, and wind up killing us inside. Ask anyone struggling with addiction, and they will testify to the emptiness of worldly enticements. Sacramental confession, moreover, is the manifestation of God's Mercy, greater than any sin, stronger than any sinner's weakness, home to the grace that reunites us to the Life of God, and initiates our transformation in virtue laden grace.
"Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you." Luke 10:17-24
Sacramental Confession is the meeting place of sinner and Forgiving Father--all taking place through the ministry of the priest, and the action of Jesus, Savior of the World. Confession, therefore, is so very much more than a 'get out of jail free' card in that it increases the very Love of the Son for the Father...within us! Subsequently, we receive what we become.
