The 2014 Oscar Nominees Luncheon took place Feb. 10 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. Nominees gathered to have lunch, pose for photos, receive their official Academy Award nomination certificate, and do interviews. (The 86th annual Oscar ceremony takes place March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. ABC has the live U.S. telecast of the show at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST.) Here is what this Oscar nominee said when doing a brief press conference interview in the Oscar Nominees Luncheon’s press room.

CATE BLANCHETT

Nominated for:
Best Actress
(“Blue Jasmine”)

Looking back on your career, is your role in “Blue Jasmine” more or less than what you expected from Hollywood?

Sometimes you’re ready to take a role by the teeth, really. And having worked so long in theater, it felt to me like a synthesis of my work on stage and my work on screen. These opportunities don’t come around every day, so I relished it.

Did you get to keep any of your wardrobe from “Blue Jasmine”?

Everything had to go back. I think the entire costume budget was less than the Hermès bag, which was also borrowed. It was very small. But Suzy Benzinger, her work on the film was extraordinary.

For me, it’s such a fruitful and creative relationship that one has with a costume designer. I don’t think Woody Allen’s films are any different, but there’s often very little rehearsal time in a film, so it’s a very fruitful experience with a costume designer when you get to try things on and begin to walk around in the character’s shoes — literally.

Your Oscar nomination for “Blue Jasmine” is your sixth Oscar nomination. Was there anything that you can say is different about this nomination?

This one certainly took me by surprise. I threw myself at the role. And whenever you do that, you’re a bit nervous and trepidatious about the result, because you’re part unconscious when you’re working deeply.

But it’s always a thrill, particularly because I’ve been away from the film industry for so long, working at the Sydney Theatre Company. It’s nice to think, “You know, I’ve got a film career to return to.” I’m excited more than anything, actually.
