- If you hadn’t gone into tennis, where would you have gone in life?
Reside in Santa Fe, Argentina, probably organizing other sports like soccer.
- If you retired today, what would you do?
I would play more tennis!
- What is your favorite tennis book?
Renée Richards book “Second Serve”
- Why do you think British tennis players have such a hard time winning Grand Slams?
British tennis players are not hungry enough and the public is putting too much pressure on them.
- What is your favorite tennis tournament?
Besides the Mercury Insurance Open? It’s the US Open.
- In Pro-Tennis, if you had the power to make a historic decision, what would you change today?
I would simplify the tennis scoring system to make it easier for beginners to get into the sport of tennis.
- If you were able to start all over, what would you do different in regards to your career?
As a tennis promoter it is important to be really familiar with current computer systems and applications. I wish I had learned more about computers earlier in life.
- Are we in the USA doing the right things to develop future tennis champions?
They need to work on making tennis a top sport in the USA. The USTA is doing a good job hiring talent with knowledge, but we need more regional training centers besides the existing two.
- What can the USTA learn from other countries’ tennis associations?
I can compare it with Argentina where tennis is very popular and kids have more chances for playing all sorts of sports. There is more exposure to multi-family sports activities. In tennis we have lots of junior tournaments and a very active national organization as well as federations in the provinces.
- Who is for you the greatest tennis player of all time?
For the men: Rod Laver because he was the complete package of tennis champion and role model.
Just for tennis alone it would be Roger Federer.
For the women: Martina Navratilova.
