The first annual Nevada Film Festival was held this past weekend, November 20-22.
Winner: Best short film
"Catching On: The Day the World Turned Gay"
This is a short comedy, run time 21 minutes.
A young man wakes up one morning to find that same sex marriage has become the law of the land. (Oh, no...gays can get married? What will happen next, men marrying animals, furniture or other unsuspecting objects? Where will it stop?)
Brian (the young man,) must now deal with the reality of gay marriage sweeping the world. His worries are magnified by his father who is less than happy with the new law. Convinced gays will be everywhere, but still needing milk, Brian's dad sends him to the liquor store.
In the short time it takes to get to the store, (or even out of the apartment building,) gayness spreads like....a plague. It spreads man to man and woman to woman via a nice tight grab of the victim's a**. Yes, that's right get grabbed in the a** and a gay person you will become.
As the plague spreads, show tunes and good taste in decorating spread right along with it.
In it's short run time, this film has more laughs than many full length comedies have. It's clever, it's well written and well acted.
Another plus is that this film is zombie-like!!! Recent zombie films have had their virus spread by the normal everyday infection (Zombieland,) by the human voice (Pontypool,) and via bio-terrorism (Dead Air.) While the voice produced zombies, (really ragers,) is a unique twist, it's nothing compared to the squeeze of the cheek.
"Catching on" is a delightful film. It also has a message that sneaks in while you're laughing..... Don't let the true scary virus spread. The virus that is hatred and bigotry.
The cast and crew worked hard for ten months to produce this film. They did an awesome job.
