Hands down, DJ Qualls is one of the favorite actors of CW’s hit show ‘Supernatural,’ and fans will soon get find out what happened to Garth after last season. Be sure to put Jan 28 on the calendar as Qualls will be live tweeting during the anticipated episode called ‘Sharp Teeth.’ This Nashville born actor is a proud cancer survivor who started out as a Prada model and made his feature film debut in the hilarious film ‘Road Trip.’ Qualls has had nothing but success with countless roles such as ‘Memphis Beat’ and his latest labor of love, FX’s hot show ‘Legit.’ I had the chance to catch up with this very talented actor and admitted proud nerd where he shares his passion for his hot FX show “Legit” as well as his love for singing and the collecting and restoring of art.
Q. Garth will be back an upcoming episode called ‘Sharp Teeth.’ What can you “spill” about your return to the show?
A. Yes, Garth is finally back and I couldn't be more excited about it. On Tuesday January 28th, we finally get an answer to why he went MIA, where he's been and why he left Kevin. When this episode was pitched to me last July by ‘Supernatural’ writer Adam Glass, my jaw hit the floor. I never saw this coming. I don't want to give anything more away. This episode is a roller coaster. As always with a Garth episode, there will be laughs and hugs, but there is some serious emotional strain and hurt to be addressed on both Dean's and Garth's part. There is also some hunting to be done. I gotta say, it was nice to get back into my hunting clothes. I’ve missed that flannel shirt and hunter coat. I’ve also missed the ‘Supernatural’ cast and crew. I have such an easy friendship with Jared and Jensen, hanging out with them is the thing I look most forward to when I find out I’m heading back to the show. I’ll live tweet the episode, provided I’m not working that night. If anyone wants to follow along or interact with me, my twitter handle is @theonlydjqualls.
Q. Tell us about your role on FX’s show ‘Legit’ and any other current projects that you’re working on.
A. While I love playing Garth more than I can say, love the fandom equally, ‘Legit’ is my home. This little show is a true labor of love. I can say with absolutely no shame, I think we are the best comedy on televisions. Our current audience is small, but I think as word gets out and people give it a chance, we're gonna win you over. Despite our small audience, we are a critical favorite. The reviews for the show are consistently outstanding, the best of my career, and were so good, they got us picked up for a second season. I’m really proud of the work we do.
The show's premise is simple. It’s about three guys living together in a house in Venice; how they relate to each other and lean one another as they face the world. I play Billy, a guy with advanced stage Muscular Dystrophy. I’m confined to a wheelchair and can only move my neck and a couple of fingers on my right hand. It’s hysterically funny and heartbreakingly poignant. I’ve never done anything like it.
Our second season begins Feb 26th on the new FXX. I hope all my ‘Supernatural’ fans will tune in, especially because ‘Legit’ had to totally reorganize our season to allow me the days I needed off to fly to Vancouver to play Garth. It was really stressful and expensive for our small show to make that work, but they did because they knew how much it meant to me. The actual filming of the show was a rough two weeks for me. I was flying back and forth from Los Angeles to Vancouver, shooting both shows at the same time.
