Catch Katie Visco in Chicago as she makes history as the youngest female to run across the U.S.

Katie Visco is running across the United States. The Glen Ellyn native left her home in Boston on March 29 and plans to reach her destination, San Diego, by mid-December. At 24, she is the youngest female ever to attempt a solo cross-country trip on foot.

Visco, who has been a runner since middle school, says she had wanted to make this trip for years, but lacked a solid cause and the time to make her dream a reality. After spending a year volunteering for City Year in Boston, she found both.

She says on her Web site, www.paveyourlane.com, “I am using my run across America as a bold example of how I am paving my lane in life – taking one of my deep passions (running) and applying it by doing something, in this case, out of the box.”

Visco also is taking the opportunity to promote and fundraise for Girls on the Run and will be stopping at local GOTR chapters and speaking with the girls.

Want to catch up with her? Visco is passing through Chicago and her hometown of Glen Ellyn this weekend. Here’s her agenda:
  • Saturday, June 27: Meet at the South Shore Cultural Center at 8 a.m. and run entirely on the lakefront path to the Field Museum, a total of 8.5 miles. At 4 p.m., meet on the steps of the Field Museum and run west on Roosevelt Road to Roosevelt and Harlem in Oak Park, 9.5 miles.
  • Sunday, June 28: Meet at 8 a.m. at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Harlem Avenue in Oak Park. Run west on Roosevelt to the intersection of Roosevelt and S. Main Street in Lombard, 11 miles. Meet at 2 p.m. in front of Enchanted Castle in Lombard (1103 S. Main St.). Run north on Main Street and turn west onto the Illinois Prairie Path for 2.5 miles. Turn onto Taylor Avenue, left onto Crescent Blvd, past Glenbard West High School and through downtown Glen Ellyn. Turn south on Main Street, right on Fairview and right on Crescent Court. End at Katie’s house, 5.5. miles.
