After reading about Totsapalooza on a peer’s site, your humble Examiner thought it necessary to talk about something with little knowledge of it. We missed Totsapalooza, again. It was sold out, so maybe that is not a big deal, but then again, it was sold out, so maybe it is a big deal. Maybe a quick examination will serve as a very early reminder for next year.
Totsapalooza is essentially a celebration of grass-roots or do-it-yourself children’s culture. Children’s author Oliver Jeffers, musician Don Kerr, and CBC’s Kevil Sylvester were among the participants in the 2013 version of this annual celebration. Originally cooked up by Small Print Press, Totsapalooza has been held at Revival on College for the last two years, though the piece above suggests that relocation to a larger venue may help those in attendance enjoy it more. In addition to the performances of stories and songs, children were invited to colour and dance, so elbow room is necessary.
Small Print Press is involved with other events as well, and the upcoming ‘Comic Arts for Kids Expo,’ done in collaboration with Toronto Public Library and Little Island Comics is reported to be appropriate for children as young as 2 years old. That one may lean into the school years, but Totsapalooza is popular enough that it will likely continue to be one of the few large special events focusing on reading and creativity for preschool children in Toronto. That surely makes it worth remembering.
