A park in Newton, NC will become a small town on Friday afternoon as the county holds its annual Relay For Life Relay. Thousands of people are expected to come out in a sea of purple and white for the American Cancer Society fundraising and celebration event. The theme for this year’s Relay is “Touchdown for a Cure”.

Southside Park on 321 Business South in Newton is the site of this year’s Catawba County Relay For Life. Relay Teams will beginning setting up tents and preparing for the activities through out Friday. Activities are expected to start around 6, with the opening ceremonies scheduled at 7pm.

This year, the Catawba County Relay will have the traditional Survivors lap, Caregivers lap, luminaries and the Miss Relay Pageant among other activities through out the evening. The Miss Relay Pageant is a womanless beauty pageant.

Almost 500 people attended the Survivor Dinner on Tuesday night at the CVCC Multipurpose Building to help kick off this year’s Relay. The guest speaker was Coach John Hamilton and Foothills Gymnastics performed a gymnastics routine for the crowd. Employees from Target and Relay volunteers served those attending a great meal catered by Texas Roadhouse of Hickory.

Relay For Life is a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. The funds raised help support cancer research. The Relay is also a way to celebrate the victories and survivors, remember those lost the battle and to fight back against cancer.
