If you are looking for a great adventure this summer, you need not look far! Santa Catalina Island is definitely the island of romance! It also is the island of fun and adventure! The rocky island just 26 miles off the California coastline, is part of the Channel Islands and lies within Los Angeles County. It has easy access by boat or plane, having companies which leave and return from Long Beach and Newport Beach, and the city of Avalon, at various times during the week and weekend. The quick trip across the channel is worth it! Enjoy everything water from snorkeling to kayaking; scuba diving, boating, sailing, ocean rafting, swimming, para-sailing and even zip lining. Discover the many scenic views and 75 square miles of beauty with an inland motor tour, eco jeep tour, off-road tour or a walking tour. There is even a haunted Catalina tour. Avalon has bicycle rentals and golf cart rentals, and has a water taxi service. It also has the famous glass bottom boat and submarine tours. Obtaining a permit from the Catalina Conservancy, gives further access to wander off into the interior and camp at a multitude of locations.
Avalon is the island’s only incorporated city, and houses 90 percent of the it’s population. The second center of population is the unincorporated village of Two Harbors at the island’s isthmus. There you may spot the large bison who roam the area. Avalon has a beautiful underwater dive park, the first non profit underwater park in the U.S. It has extremely easy access, with stairs leading into the water. The park has a scuba service trailer, filling scuba tanks. Scuba classes are held at the dive park located behind the most beautiful landmark on Catalina Island, the illustrious Casino. The legendary Casino building now houses the Catalina Island Museum, which includes the history of the island and a magnificent theatre. The building has tours and should be a must to see. The detailed artwork found in its architecture and décor is stunning! The famed Casino holds events throughout the year, including the famous Jazztraxt Festival, an annual silent film benefit, weddings and more. Catalina Island boasts a beautiful golf course, famed shopping and peaceful spas. There are many hotels and restaurants to enjoy. Close to a million people travel every year to enjoy the beauty and serenity the island offers. Summertime is the most crowded due to it’s perfect weather. There is a July 4th parade and fireworks. Summer beach bingo and concert series are every Tuesday and Thursday. Summer day camp and kids fishing Derby are Wednesdays. August boasts the audacious Church Mouse Marlin Invitational. With a wealth of special events there is plenty to do on Santa Catalina Island!
