Cat shot in Animal Cruelty Case

A Highlands man was charged with animal cruelty Saturday after throwing an elderly cat into the air and shooting it.

Joseph D. Morgan, 24, has been charged with cruelty to animal/torture with firearm after allegedly using a shotgun loaded with bird shot to kill a black cat as he tossed into the air on Riverside Street. The feline's body was found near the riverbank.

Morgan told the deputy the stray, sick cat needed to be euthanized.

The district attorney's office accepted the criminal charge against Morgan. The Houston chapter of the SPCA also sent an investigator who removed the cat's body for autopsy and disposal.

Morgan's bail was set at $10,000 and he's scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
