A well-known website that crusades for health and safety in animal foods, Truth About Pet Food by Susan Thixton, released a caution regarding Merrick canned cat food on January 6, 2013. The canned food, which is widely available and distributed both online and at most Petco stores, has had reports of mold upon popping the lid off, and also of rancid smell.
In the article cans from two different cases of the cat food were found to be contaminated, and this has been reported to the manufacturer - Merrick pet foods. It will also be reported to the FDA. In further research, it was found that as early as January 12, 2012 - there were reports of mold in this brand's cat food. A posting on Itchmo Forums for Cats and Dogs by Buddy's Mom, showed an open can with excessive mold on it and relayed the issue with contacting the manufacturer. There was no follow-up by the manufacturer and no recompense.
