On Wednesday, April 3, pet food manufacturer Bravo recalled a select number of its frozen raw foods for cats and dogs due to their potential to be contaminated with salmonella. Bravo recalled 231 cases that had been distributed nationwide. The three formulas have specific best-by dates. The company has received no reports of illness in either people or animals associated with the product.
In a statement, Bravo said, “This recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution,” the company stated. “While these products tested negative for pathogens by an independent third party prior to distribution, they were run on the same day or an adjacent day to a product that tested positive for pathogens. The product that tested positive has been 100 percent contained and is not subject to this recall.”
Recalled products:
• 5-pound Chicken Balance frozen raw diet tubes with “best used by” dates of 3-6-15 and 3-12-15 imprinted on the side of the plastic casing. Twenty-six and 36 cases of each were distributed, respectively.
• 2-pound Chicken Blend frozen raw diet tubes with the “best used by” date of 3-21-15 imprinted on the side of the plastic casing. Sixty-seven cases were distributed.
• 5-pound Beef Blend Burgers bags with “best used by” dates of 3-21-15 and 3-22-15 imprinted on the back panel of the plastic bag. Forty-seven and 55 cases of each were distributed, respectively.
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning in pets include lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. People who handle contaminated pet products may exhibit similar symptoms. Bravo is urging consumers to return any unopened recalled food to the place of purchase for a full refund. Pet owners who opened the food are asked to dispose of it and contact the retailer for a full refund.
