Cat condom campaign urges Denver residents to fix cat overpopulation crisis

RMACA got Denver residents attention for low cost S/N with this mailer

Some 100,000 households in several Denver suburbs were more than slightly surprised when they recently received a Valpak coupon in the mail for low-cost cat spay/neuter that carried a 'cat condom' theme.  A joke? Some recipients might have gotten a chuckle, but for Rocky Mountain Alley Cat Alliance (RMACA) its mailer is serious business – to call residents attention to the cat overpopulation crisis and the need to ‘fix the problem.’ In 2009 some 24,000 cats were euthanized in Colorado because they had no homes. Today as the economy continues struggling, overcrowded municipal shelters are euthanizing 70 percent of the cats they take in.

The coupons are helping to raise awareness about the RMACA’s The Feline Fix, Colorado’s first high quality, high volume spay/neuter cat clinic, which opened last year. This year, the clinic’s “Beat the Heat” campaign is offering cat guardians an additional $5 off an already low priced spay/neuter surgery ($35 for tame cats; $20 for feral cats) simply by mentioning the program name when they make their reservation. The organization hopes to double its annual spay and neutering procedures to 6,000 and prevent up to 45,000 homeless kitten births each year in Colorado.

In addition to the coupons sent in the mail, RMACA has been handing out Tom Cat Condom packets at outreach events, fairs and festivals, according to Amy Angelilli, the organization’s executive director. The back of the condom packet says “Prevent a litter, cover your critter.”

Angelilli told the Denver Westword that one of the RMACA volunteers came up with the idea for the kitty condom. It turned out there is a product called latex finger cots for finger injuries that happen to look like condoms.

Next on the agenda
On Labor Day, Animal Assistance Foundation will launch a series of videos with Angelilli, an improv comedy veteran, starring as Nurse Nancy who teaches pets how to avoid pregnancy.” (Let’s hope the video turns up on YouTube!)
