VaPiano bills itself as "Defining the future of fresh dining". Think casual dining meets urban chic. Upon entering VaPiano you are greeted by a hostess that gives you a "chip-card". She explains that when you purchase anything, from beverages to food, the food preparer scans the card you are given. At the end of the visit, you take your card to the checkout and pay for everything there. This is especially great for groups whose members want to pay individually. It saves asking the wait staff if they can "split checks" for a whole table. My "Girls Night Out" friends particularly loved this feature.
There is no wait staff. Food preparers are behind a counter preparing your food to order. Here comes the fresh part. Each meal is prepared to order with the ingredients you prefer. There is a menu with items defined by ingredients, but I had no problem adding or subtracting to my pasta entre. It was delicious. Pizzas and salads are delicious and plentiful also. There are many selections as to kind of pasta or sauces and ingredients for everything.
The atmosphere is open and contemporary. The evening we were there the restaurant was full but it was easy to carry on a conversation without yelling over loud music or a din of voices. Dinner was great an fast so we could get to our movie. If, though, you wanted to stay and enjoy beverages in a relaxed atmosphere, the bar area is the place. Upholstered bench seating with complimenting barrel chairs around a bistro table was inviting for an long conversation over wine or drinks. There is also an outside area for good weather days.
The general manager, Pierce Laughter tells me that VaPiano means "It Goes Slow". Slow or fast, everything was good. The first location of VaPiano in Dallas is atMockingbird Station. There are sure to be more. This is a successful concept that, I'm certain, will become more popular.
