Local Ore. company Castor & Pollux is a trusted brand you can find everywhere in Portland these days. What's great about this company is that they also walk the talk when it comes to supporting the local pet community. (I personally have purchased their natural, organic pet treats for my dogs and I've always been pleased at the ingredients used).

Castor & Pollux developed PetWorks Partners™, a pet adoption partnership program, that allows non-profits to receive financial contributions and pet food when they conduct in-store, face-to-face meetings with potential adoptive pet parents. When volunteers bring pets to a large retail location where their products are sold, they make a contribution to that organization. They also help drive awareness by promoting the events through their own social media tools. For anyone involved with a small animal rescue, these kinds of efforts go a long way!

According to Castor & Pollux social media manager and guru, Kate Sheofsky, they also offer special non-profit partner pricing on their natural and organic foods. "This is intended to give animals in our partners’ care the opportunity to eat a high-quality diet while they wait to find their forever homes," said Sheofsky.

They currently partner with over 20 non-profits located around the country. To see the complete list, see their website: http://castorpolluxpet.com/petworks_parnters.

The local animal rescue partner currently identified for this program is Oregon Dog Rescue.  The two have been partners since April 2010.

"When Oregon Dog Rescue approached us and told us of their need for high quality pet food, we sat down and came up with a program that would work for both of us. While conducting weekly adoption events at the Tualatin Petsmart, Oregon Dog Rescue is able to distribute information to new pet parents about the benefits of the natural and organic food that their dogs are being fed, and in turn, we donate back a percentage of the food that is sold during the event, as well as give a cash contribution to help out with their expenses," said Sheofsky.

“The dogs that come in to Oregon Dog Rescue have been through a lot,” said Todd Martin, VP of Marketing at Castor & Pollux. “We wanted to give them access to a natural, organic diet as they start this next chapter of their lives.”

Adoptions are held every Saturday from 11am-5pm at the Tualatin, Oregon Petsmart, where Oregon Dog Rescue volunteers are on hand to answer questions for potential adopters. Since forming this partnership in April 2010, Castor & Pollux has donated over 1,300 lbs of food to the shelter.

This is certainly an example for local companies - a simple yet very effective way to help local animal rescues. The model is a win-win for everyone involved and these dogs can now start their life with a well balanced, healthy meal.

I know from experience. Animal rescue organizations have so many mouths to feed, it's really difficult to buy the best brands for every animal fostered and rescued. While ALL the rescues I've come into contact try very hard to do this, it's nice that Castor & Pollux recognized this and are helping out.
