These days ABC’s Castle has two “will they or won’t they” couples. Lanie and Esposito (Tamala Jones and Jon Huertas) may have already gone there by trying their hand at inter-office dating, but Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) are still dancing around each other. And honestly, that’s just how Huertas-- and Esposito-- likes it!
“I don’t want them together. I’d like to see them actually get pulled farther apart. I think just to raise the stakes, and you know, I’d like to see something bigger get in the way than Beckett dating some random guy or Castle dating some random girl…It has to be a bigger obstacle!” Huertas expressed.
Uh oh, those might be fighting words around the internet!
But don’t completely freak out, Caskett fans; Huertas didn’t drop a spoiler there in terms of what may actually get in the way of Castle and Beckett before season’s end. Though he admitted that the writers and producers of Castle do encourage the actors to bring their ideas to the table, he uses his influence for Esposito’s storylines-- namely diving into his sniper and PTSD history in “Kill Shot”-- not standing in the way of the show’s epic romance.
What Huertas did share about upcoming episodes of Castle, though, certainly makes it seem like Castle and Beckett will get a little bit closer, due to being left in a dire situation, before they may inevitably be pulled apart again. It appears Castle and Beckett find themselves in trouble once again, allowing Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Esposito to take the lead on the case of the week and save the hides of the dynamic duo.
“There’s another one of those episodes where Beckett and Castle get themselves into hot water, and they need to be gotten out of the hot water by Esposito and Ryan. And the water thing is kind of hitting it right on the nose. So that’s a really fun episode-- as harrowing as it is, we always have some fun. That’s one of the things that Ryan and I really like to do is find the fun,” Huertas teased.
Esposito, who is focused on his work and not interested in getting in the middle of relationships-- his own or otherwise-- is trying to keep his head down and his mind and mouth of it, in other words.
“He’s encouraged Beckett to go after Castle before, and she didn’t take [his advice],” Huertas reminded. “He’s like ‘Look, we all know what’s going on,’ and he’s throwing his hands in the air and being about the work-- Esposito is about the work and helping Beckett. So if she’s protecting herself-- you know, she has a lot of things to work through with her mother’s death and being shot. So if she’s protecting herself, then I’m with her.”
Earlier in the season Esposito helped Beckett come to terms with her PTSD after being shot in the cemetery at the end of the second season, and that is an on-going struggle of which Huertas admitted Beckett, and the show itself, has really only scratched the surface.
“The first step with PTSD is accepting you need help and accepting that help from someone you trust,” Huertas said. “So Beckett still has a long way to go, and I think we’ll be dealing with that for a while.”
So perhaps Huertas just knows that Beckett isn’t fully ready to jump into a romantic relationship right now, and to do so when she isn’t truly ready could ruin the friendship and banter she does have with Castle. If it’s only a matter of time before she is fully healthy, then it has to only be a matter of time before she can admit her feelings for Castle, right?
Castle airs on ABC on Monday nights at 10pm.
