"Castle" is now sixteen episodes into its fifth season. We've seen Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic portraying their characters in both the best of times and the worst of the times in Castle and Beckett’s lives, but while Castle has already confessed his love for his partner on two occasions now, she’s still holding back. But why? According to a spoiler tidbit released on March 5, those three little words to Rick Castle will apparently be coming soon from Kate Beckett, but exactly when is still open for speculation.
So, let’s speculate.
Since Castle and Beckett have gotten together, they’ve discovered the identity of Beckett’s mother’s killer, gone on a romantic getaway to The Hamptons, celebrated their first Christmas as a couple, survived both Castle being framed for murder and the brief stint his first ex-wife had in the loft, and now most recently, Castle’s daughter was abducted and his father has both entered the picture and quickly disappeared.
All of the above moments could be considered favorable opportunities for Kate to have told Castle she loves him, but nope. She is still holding back.
Kate, please. Stay with me, Kate. Don't leave me, please. Stay with me, okay? Kate, I love you. I love you, Kate.
For Castle, it took a bullet to Beckett’s chest for him to finally come out with his feelings, and when he thought she was about to throw her life away, he put his heart out there again. The “Ask Ausiello” tidbit suggests that after Meredith planted that little seed in the back of Beckett’s mind in "Significant Others", the detective is waiting for Castle to reveal more of himself to her before she takes that final leap. What do you suppose she’s looking for? Will tales of Castle’s youth, learning more about why his marriages dissolved, or how he feels about the existence of his father be something that might tip the scale where other moments have not?
Will what Meredith said about her marriage to Castle being one-sided come back into play and stir up a little drama for the pair before the season is through and lead to a confession?
In the end, we all know that Kate loves him; it’s been written on her face for years and even Esposito has verbalized it by saying, "I know how you feel about the guy. I love him, too." But what is it going to take to make her finally say it herself? There are a few episodes coming up soon that could present more potential opportunities. For example, with Castle suspecting he's doomed after watching a haunted DVD in "Scared to Death", he may start seeking out comfort and reassurances after all, much like he did with the mummy curse in season 2. There's also the 100th episode heading our way. "The Lives of Others" takes place on Castle's birthday; a step up from giving him a drawer could certainly be Kate giving him those three words.
Whatever the case, there's only eight episodes left in the season now. What do you think? Do you suppose there will be some big drama unfolding before it happens? And more importantly, will we have to wait until the season finale before Kate Beckett finally says, “I love you”?
