Casting Services on IMDbPro

IMDb. com is a free, comprehensive database that reflects the current popularity and marketability of movies, actors, directors and more based on viewer interest. IMDb uses the following: STARmeter, MOVIEmeter & COMPANYmeter. IMDbPro is a paid service that offers comprehensive and filtered assistance to directors who submit casting breakdowns and to actors who are seeking such breakdowns.

According to IMDb Pro, " STARmeterTM, MOVIEmeterTM , and COMPANYmeterTM are rankings of every person, title and company in IMDb. Available only on IMDbPro, our website designed for people who work in the entertainment industry, STARmeterTM, MOVIEmeterTM , and COMPANYmeterTM provide industry professionals with insights into the popularity of film and television productions as well as the people and companies that make them."

Further, IMDbPro explains what the rankings mean, "Plain and simple, they represent what people are interested in, based not on small statistical samplings, but on the actual behavior of millions of IMDb users... high rankings on STARmeterTM, MOVIEmeterTM , and COMPANYmeterTM do not necessarily mean that something is 'good'. They do mean that there is a high level of public awareness and/or interest in the title, person or company."

IMDbPro outlines how their ratings are calculated, "IMDbPro uses proprietary algorithms that take into account several measures of popularity for people, titles and companies. The primary measure is who and what people are looking at on IMDb. The rankings are updated on a weekly basis.... Users vote through their actions, every time someone visits an IMDb page about one of the over 2 million titles and over 5 million people in the database, we record that 'pageview'. It is the sum total of these pageviews that form the foundation of the STARmeterTM, MOVIEmeterTM , and COMPANYmeterTM rankings."

IMDb answers questions and allegations about the possibility of rigging the ratings, "IMDb.com has over 160 million visitors each month. The STARmeterTM, MOVIEmeterTM , and COMPANYmeterTM rankings are based on a cumulative total of more than 3 billion pageviews per month. Furthermore, we have designed the ranking algorithm so that the actions of one user (or small group of users) has a limited impact; we monitor STARmeterTM rankings for any possible fraudulent traffic generation, and the algorithm is periodically improved to detect and neutralize any attempts to 'stuff the ballot'...."

This is not to say that IMDb rankings are fair or even accurate, although IMDb contends that they track and follow up on possible manipulation of their system. It seems that attempts at manipulation can hurt IMDb ratings. From IMDB, "One of the major factors that STARmeter takes into account is the number of pageviews your filmography page gets on our site. " However, it seems that what appears like attempts at manipulations (extraordinary measures such as paid services or inordinate, extraordinary visits to pages) can hurt IMDb ranking/ratings. On the other hand, it seems that IMDB views genuine Likes, visits, revisits as proper use of IMDb.

Movie consumers use the free Internet Movie Database (IMDb) to look up details of who, what, where, when...for movies. Filmmakers, cast, and crew subscribe to IMDbPRO, started 10 years ago, because it offers information budget, companies, contact listings, and the status of movies (post-production, pre-production, development...) and more. IMDb CEO Col Needham said at SXSW, "We come from Amazon's customer-centric culture."

March 11, IMDb launched new tools for directors. With filtering tools to narrow down searches, these new casting tools give any director a user-friendly way to find the right actors and to provide easy-to-use tool for actors to efficiently submit and find good work. Pro Casting is already making casting more efficient and is already helping actors easily submit for good work.

With IMDb's Pro Casting, directors and filmmakers can post unlimited casting notices, use the search filters to narrow submissions by specific criteria, add possible actors to a personalized list and, and even share their lists. Directors, investors, and producers can gauge an actor’s marketability with IMDbPro’s graphs and find recommendations of actors similar to the ones they are viewing. With Pro Casting actors can update their IMDbPro profile, resume, headshots, and demo reels. They can also share their page online. Further, actors can view and filter casting notices, submit directly for roles with their IMDb Pro page, and keep projects they are following on a personalized list.

IMDb and IMDb Pro have been works in progress. Their features have not always been user-friendly and there have been questions about their rankings. However, the reality that I see is that more and more casting directors, producers, distributors, investors..., who are involved with high budget movies, work with and use IMDb rankings, resumes, demos, and other services. Now actors can find and submit for good work efficiently and effectively with IMDb job notices.
