Though Lionsgate has officially kept very quiet on the status of casting for The Hunger Games in regards to male leads Peeta and Gale, an official decision could come as soon as this week.
Earlier reports indicated that the studio was conducting screen tests with several actors for the two roles, opposite actress Jennifer Lawrence, who has already been cast as Katniss in the film. Now, media reports are fueling rumors that two actors are "frontrunners" for the roles of Peeta and Gale.
Deadline indicates that Josh Hutcherson is in the lead to play Peeta, while Liam Hemsworth is in the lead to play Gale. Though unsubstantiated, both actors were previously mentioned in a short list of contenders for the two roles -- along with Lucas Till, Hunter Parrish, Alexander Ludwig, Evan Peters, David Henrie, Robbie Amell, and Drew Roy.
Of course, being named a "frontrunner" in an ambiguous media report is nothing close to confirmation from Lionsgate -- though it's worth considering that Lawrence was originally named a "frontrunner" for Katniss by media reports, even while Lionsgate publicly denied any such thing. (Only days later, Lionsgate announced that Lawrence had nabbed the role.)
Whether or not there are any frontrunners for the roles of Peeta or Gale, one thing is certain: an official casting announcement is not far off. In fact, an official decision from Lionsgate could come as soon as this week.
The Hob even reports that all of the potential actors vying for the role of Peeta have signed tentative contracts with the studio -- so that if one of them is offered the role, that's it; it's a done deal. According to The Hob, screen testing is supposed to end on Tuesday, with a decision and announcement likely to follow shortly thereafter.
