An arrest has been made in the Miss Teen USA Cassidy Wolf extortion scheme. Jared Abrahams, 19, gave himself up to FBI agents in Orange County, Calif. on Thursday, reported CBS News on Sept. 26. Abrahams is a resident of Temecula, Calif., where Cassidy Wolf, also 19, graduated from high school. Further reports say she is not the only victim, but no other names have been released.
The cybercrime plot centered around a webcam hacking, where Abrahams collected pictures from Wolf’s computer. In a strange twist, the hacker was demanding nude photos, which victims were supposed to send to him, to prevent his publishing the private-but-innocuous photos he had already stolen. Did he really think Cassidy Wolf – or anyone – would respond to this crazy extortion?
The plot got even stranger. Abrahams is alleged to have used victims’ own email accounts to contact them with his threats and demands. They were to choose one from the following list: “Send nude photos, send a nude video, or log onto Skype and do what he says for five minutes.” This sort of crime is so bizarre, it is likely to be a first criminal attempt, although “multiple victims” of the extortion have been involved, in overlapping cases.
Even stranger, this whole scenario and FBI investigation has been brewing since March. Agents raided Jared Abrahams’ home and seized his equipment back in June. Cassidy Wolf described her attempted extortion on the “Today” show weeks ago, but no arrest was made until Thursday.
