Cask ale returns to Rooster's Beak in two weeks, this time featuring a new brewery from right here in Georgia.

Friday, September 6th, Rooster's Beak (215 10th Street, Augusta, Ga.) will be hosting Savannah, Ga.'s own Southbound Breweing Co.

Southbound Brewing, which launched its first beer in May 2013, is the child of former SweetWater Brewing Co. brewer Smith Matthews and former SweetWater marketing specialist Carly Wiggins. Matthews attended the Siebel Institute of Technology to hone his brewing skills, and after brewing at SweetWater, both Matthews and Wiggins transitioned to respective positions at Mount Pleasant, S.C.'s Westbrook Brewing Company when that brewery came into fruition. Matthews now serves as Brewmaster at Southbound, and Wiggins stands as the company's Marketing Director. Southbound's head brewer, Alex Beard, also attended the Siebel Institute with Matthews and has worked in the past at Baltimore, Md.'s Clipper City Brewing Co. (brewers of the Heavy Seas line of beers).

Currently, Southbound's portfolio includes three year-round brews:

  • Scattered Sun Belgian Wit, a 5.2% ABV Belgian-style Witbier
  • Iron Lion Pale Ale, a 5.8% ABV American Pale Ale brewed with the 'big C' hop varieties -- Chinook, Cascade, Centennial, and Columbus
  • Hoplin' IPA, a 6.2% ABV American-style IPA brewed with Amarillo, Chinook, Cascade, Magnum, and Citra hops

Additionally, the brewery's first seasonal brew, a 9.5% ABV Belgian-style Tripel called Day Trip'eler, will be released soon.

All three year-round brews will be on-tap at Rooster's Beak the night of the event, as well as a specially crafted cask of Hoplin' IPA.

Be sure to make it out and show some support for these local newcomers, and help welcome them to Augusta! The beers start flowing when the doors open at 5 pm.
