Cash for klunkers: Gun manufacturer outbids Chicago's gun buyback program

Last month, Chicago's Police Department offered residents a chance to sell any firearm to the city for $50 (with $100 offered for so-called "assault weapons") It has been a cherished tradition for gun owners to sell old, disused or unusable "clunkers" at these sales and use the proceeds to fund new gun purchases, but this year's miserly offering led many to stay home, and this year's haul of guns "off the streets" dropped by 72% compared to last year. Now gun manufacturer SIG-Sauer is offering four times as much for old handguns.

To be fair, SIG-Sauer has higher standards than Chicago does:

  • Revolvers must be at least .38 caliber.
Semi-automatic pistols must be at least 9mm  in caliber.
All "Klunkers" must be operating firearms and free of "cracks in frame or other key components."

It seems likely that SIG-Sauer is being more choosy about which guns they'll accept because they plan to sell the "clunkers," at least some of which will end up being resold to law-abiding gun owners at retail.  Chicago, of course, would never do such a thing; it is official Chicago policy that selling a firearm to a law-abiding citizen after a background check is merely "putting a gun back on the street." Guns that aren't desirable enough to disappear in a Chicago gun buy back are melted down to make concrete-reinforcing bars, clothes hangers or other objects that don't frighten Chicago politicians. In addition, the offer is only good for purchasers of specific SIG-Sauer models: the P220, P226, P229, 1911, and SIG556 lines. However, that's still quite a bit of choice--the P220 alone is listed in 33 variations on SIG-Sauer's website.

On the other hand, their offer will last a lot longer than Chicago's; Chicago paid for firearms only on one day, although they did magnanimously allow that anyone who wished could turn in his gun for free at any Chicago police station any day of the year. SIG-Sauer's offer expires on Dec. 4th, so those who wish to save $200 on their Christmas shopping still have some time--something to keep in mind particularly if you happen to work on the staff here at the Chicago Gun Rights Examiner. Although your Chicago GRE is of course immune to bribery (since he is not actually a native of Chicago) he has never been known to fire any lackey or lickspittle who has presented him with a SIG-Sauer 1911 or a SIG556 within the previous calendar year. Even if you don't work for a capricious and tyrannical gun nut, though, SIG-Sauer's offer certainly outshines Chicago's by an order of magnitude.

I would rather Chicago get criminals off the streets - that's who's committing crimes.

This is an outrageous offer! Who is SIG trying to kid? This is obviously a marketing scheme to sell new SIGS. I would NEVER ever sell any of my SIGs -- even back to SIG! Better yet, send them back for to the custom shop for a tune up.

Well, that didn't seem to work out well for them. Recently, though, I have learned of a site that sells good law enforcement tactical gear. I wish that Chicago would check them out. The URL is lawenforcementtacticalgear.com.
