Casey Anthony has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in Florida, claiming assets of approximately $1,100 and $792,000 in liabilities, ABC News reported on Sunday, Jan. 27. Anthony filed the bankruptcy paperwork in federal court in Tampa on Friday. Court papers list Casey Anthony as unemployed, with no recent income.
Casey listed debts including $500,000 in attorney fees for Jose Baez; $145,660 for Orange County Sheriff’s office for a judgment covering investigative fees and costs related to the murder trial where Anthony was acquitted of killing her two-year-old daughter Caylee. The bankruptcy petition also includes $68,540 owed to the Internal Revenue Service for taxes, interest and penalties; and $61,505 for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for court costs.
In Casey Anthony’s Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing it also states that she is a defendant in several civil lawsuits, including one brought by Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez for defamation.
The purpose of Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection is for Anthony to be discharged of all existing debts, which would give Casey a fresh start financially. A trustee may have the right to take possession of and sell non-exempt property and use the sale of proceeds to pay creditors. A debtor may be held responsible for some obligations, such as taxes and student loans. If Casey Anthony were found to have committed “certain kinds of improper conduct” she could be denied bankruptcy protection.
Casey Anthony’s bankruptcy petition was filed the same day that a Florida appellate court set aside tow of the four convictions Anthony faced for lying to detectives during the investigation into her missing daughter, Caylee Anthony. Casey was sentenced to time served for the misdemeanors. For her protection, her whereabouts have been kept secret since her released from Florida state supervision last year.
