Case Western ranked among greenest colleges

The Princeton Review and the USGBC have released the second annual edition of "The Princeton Review's Guide to 311 Green Colleges."  The guide profiles 308 U.S. colleges and three Canadian colleges that demonstrate commitments to sustainability in campus infrastructure, academic offerings, activities and career preparation.

The guide includes complete school profiles, plus Green Highlights covering the most impressive sustainability initiatives and Green Facts detailing a wide array of environmental issues, from a school's use of renewable energy sources to the availability of career guidance for green jobs.

Case Western Reserve University, with LEED-certified buildings at the Village at 115 residence hall complex, mandates new construction must be LEED-certified or certified using a comparable third-party rating system.  Other CWRU Green Facts include a formal sustainability committee, an environmental studies degree program and 30% of the food budget spent on local or organic food.

Seven other Ohio colleges and universities also made the list: Denison University, Kenyon College, Mount Union College, Oberlin College, Ohio University, The Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati.

The schools in the guide were chosen based on a 2010 survey conducted by The Princeton Review to total its annual Green Rating scores, ranging from 60 to 99. The survey included more than 50 questions about sustainability, and schools selected for the guide received Green Rating scores of 80 or above.

Congratulations to CWRU, and to all 311 colleges, for their commitment to sustainable policies and programs.
