Children are often the forgotten or overlooked victims when something happens to tear the family apart. In Lancaster – and across the nation – Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) advocate for abused and neglected children. These volunteers work to ensure that these children do not get lost in our overburdened system. This Friday (1 November) CASA of Lancaster County will host the fourth annual Heroes Gala and Benefit Auction at Casa di Fiori at The Inn at Leola Village. The event will be emceed by Anne Shannon, of WGAL-TV.
“This event is a wonderful opportunity for our friends, donors, and volunteers to support CASA and help grow and advance the organization.” said Jessica Laspino, Executive Director.
Mary Sourber, Director of Placement Services at COBYS Family Services, will receive the individual “Hero in the Life of a Child” award, while Central Penn College will be honored as the organizational recipient for their long-term and generous commitment. At the event, CASA will name the Clark Family Foundation Volunteer of the Year. The recipient is a CASA volunteer nominated by their peers as having ideally demonstrated the principles of child advocacy.
There will be both silent and live auctions throughout the evening. The auctions will be primarily for local goods and services, local restaurants and entertainment vouchers. One lucky person might win a one week get away in a two bedroom condo in Florida. In the end, of course, it will be the children who are the true winners.
Children with a CASA volunteer are more apt to find a safe and permanent home. They are more likely to spend less time in foster care, finding that safe and permanent home sooner. Between September 2012 and August 2013, 132 children were served. Of those, 28 achieved permanency. This is an increase from the year prior when 105 children were serviced and only 16 achieved permanency, according to CASA’s website.
The admission price is $75 per person. It includes two beer or wine tickets. The event begins at 6 p.m. There will be dancing, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and food. For more information, contact CASA at (717)208-3280 or visit www.casalancaster.org.
