Chandra Levy trial cartoon

Mike Lester has a super-casual style, quite the opposite of traditional editorial cartoons! Caption on Mike's cartoon: Jury convicts Ingmar Guandique, illegal immigrant and MS-13 gang member, of murdering Chandra Levy.

This cartoon on the Chandra Levy trial is a pretty straightforward idea, although the Op-Ed pages don't cover murders or trials very often, unless it's in their own area. More importantly, this cartoon is about the media itself, which ignores essential details, if they think it might "taint" the objectivity of the article.

The LA Times never reports if an accused person is illegal alien or part of a gang. Wouldn't that be helpful to the public, and isn't that enough on its own, to arrest the perpetrator? Apparently not! Mike points out here that Ingmar Guandique, Chandra Levy's killer, was indeed here illegally, was already guilty of other crimes, and implies that illegal conduct of this sort might have stopped him before he killed again.

Obamacare cartoon

Caption of Obama and Nancy Pelosi looking at Obamacare: We should have spent more time on the birth announcement.

I laughed out loud at this cartoon by Eric Allie on Obamacare! Something about the octopus in the baby carriage...Amusing   sketches of Obama and Pelosi staring at their little darling, too. There's an Uncle Sam running away in the corner, a rather tired old symbol that most cartoonists still use, but his bug eyes and running legs make him more interesting than most.  PS: you have to admire Eric for not drawing all 8 legs on the octopus, as in this cartoon. He's carefree!

North Korea vs the US cartoon

Caption: The US and South Korea circle around the shark of North Korea with a big stick.

Let's get serious with these cartoons, and add some danger. South Korea may not be bff with the US, but certainly North Korea is no one's friend right now. Wiki refers to it as The Hermit Kingdom. South Korea wants a strong Navy, and that makes North Korea skittish.

Very clever use of leader Kim Jong Il's strange pouffy hair, as a shark fin in the drawing! The cartoonist, Paresh titles this cartoon Naval Exercise, but I would call it a foreigner's idea of America: surfer dudes on water skis.

The small character labels in this cartoon are unobtrusive, and don't detract from the great activity here. I like Kim Jong Il floating in the water, too. But will a big stick work to keep him underwater?

Thanks to Cagle Cartoons for all the good work from these guys!

My own recent cartoons: In case you missed it, my DADT (Don't Ask, Don't Tell) cartoon was picked as one of the best cartoons of the year for Slate. I also did this snazzy cartoon on Miss Sarah Palin.
