Cartagena de Indias, or simply Cartagena, is a large city on the northern coast of the South American country of Colombia. Panama lies to the west, and Venezuela to the east. It's a popular spot for tourists and a starting point for visiting other cities on the Caribbean coast, or going out to the islands.
Although founded by Spaniards, there were indigenous people living here long before. The city is very beautiful and many of the older colonial streets remind me of Casco Viejo, Panama.
Cartagena is safe for tourists as long as you don't go wandering around alone at night. Tourism is very important to the economy here and you will find that the Colombian people are very friendly and helpful.
