Carrie Underwood sticks to the formula

  Play On album cover

Carrie Underwood released her third studio album, Play On, earlier last week on November 3, 2009. Today we've gotten word that the album has debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 charts and # 1 on the Billboard Top Country Charts selling over 318,000 copies. To sum this up into plain english - this is the largest sales week for an album by a woman in 2009 and the second-best sales week for a country release.  Her first single Cowboy Casanova has peaked at the #11 position on Billboard Hot 100.

Cowboy Casanova sticks to the formula of pop-ularizing female country singers.  For Carrie Underwood that includes steel violins, thundering rhythms, catchy melody, and a sassy attitude all seen before on her previous hit "Before He Cheats."  However, no matter how much she sticks to the formula, listeners didn't deny this single from climbing the charts making it the fastest rising single for a country artist in 2009.

Following Cowboy Casanova are Underwood's promotional digital released singles all making their debut on Billboard Hot 100 without any type of radio play.

Mama's Song - # 77
Temporary Home - # 92
Undo It - # 86
