An Illinois man was sentenced to 66 years in prison on Tuesday for beating a woman in the face and head with a hammer, raping an eight-year-old child, and repeatedly stabbing the family dog with a kitchen knife reports ABC local news.com.
In August, Daniel Happ, 29, pleaded "guilty but mentally ill" in a Kane County Circuit Court. According to the Courier-News, Happ was visiting a woman at her boyfriend's home last March at which time he went on a rampage and attacked the woman, stabbed the dog, and after showing the woman's stepdaughter what he had done, then sexually assaulted the child.
Happ, who lived on Seminole Drive in Carpentersville, had been hospitalized 28 times in the past for mental problems and had one previous arrest for burglary in 2005 where he pleaded guilty and was placed on probation.
Happ was under the care of a psychiatrist at the time of his attack, and when he was done with the egregious deeds that day, called 911 to turn himself in to authorities.
The woman Happ attacked survived, however has undergone extensive rehabilitation as a result of brain damage from the attack. She still has problems with balance. Her dog, a pitbull also survived the attack and is being fostered until the woman is strong enough to care for her dog.
The good news about justice for this heinous crime is Happ should not ever see freedom until he is 95 years old.
