In an obvious (and ongoing) public relations attempt to clean up its name after a year of mishaps and more in its wake, Carnival Cruise is sponsoring a contest for high schoolers according to a press release emailed to the media today, October 3.
The world’s largest cruise operator has teamed up with New Orleans television station WDSU-TV to find the most spirited high school marching band in the Big Easy. “The Battle of the High School Marching Bands” competition celebrates local spirit and skill, and will ultimately award the winning band a $10,000 cash prize from Carnival and chance to perform aboard Carnival Sunshine, the line’s latest ship to call New Orleans home when it arrives there for its North American debut this November.
To enter the contest New Orleans schools must submit a three-minute video of their band performing their school fight song. Videos need to be clearly marked with the name of the school and the title of the contest “The Battle of the High School Marching Bands.” If you think you have a chance to wine, upload a to YouTube by Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 6 p.m. CST, and email a link to the video to Contest@WDSU.com where a special judging panel will select the top five finalists. Winners will be posted to the WDSU-TV website beginning October 22, 2013.
The grand price is 10,000 for the winning school’s music program courtesy of Carnival Cruise Lines, along with the opportunity to perform aboard Carnival Sunshine during its U.S. debut celebration at the Port of New Orleans on Sunday, November 17, 2013. Each of the four additional band finalists will receive a $1,000 cash prize from the cruise line.
The completely renovated Carnival Sunshine sets sail November 18, 2013,on seven-day cruises to the Bahamas and the Western Caribbean from New Orleans. Carnival’s lengthy relationship with the Big Easy goes back to 1994 when it launched the first year-round cruises. The addition of Carnival Sunshine is expected to attract 330,000 passengers annually from the Crescent City.
