Carmen Ejogo to play Coretta Scott King in civil rights film

Actress Carmen Ejogo is set to once again step into the iconic shoes of late civil rights activist Coretta Scott King but this time for the big screen. According to a report at The Hollywood Reporter on Monday Ejogo is in talks to play Mrs. King for the film “Selma” which is under the direction of Ava DuVernay.

Ejogo played the King matriarch in the 2001 HBO television movie “Boycott” opposite her husband and fellow actor Jeffrey Wright. Actor David Oyelowo has already been cast to protray MLK in“Selma”. The drama will chronicle the historic voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Also on board is media mogul Oprah Winfrey who will serve as one of the movie’s producers.

Ejogo is one of several actresses to play Coretta Scott King. Angela Bassett portayed her in the 2013 Lifetime movie “Betty & Coretta” as did Cicely Tyson for the 1978 television mini-series “King”.

Ejogo’s film credits include Whitney Houston’s last movie “Sparkle” and “Alex Cross” both from 2012 and 1998’s “The Avengers”.
