Carmelo Anthony officially announced that he was back with the New York Knicks on Sunday. In similar fashion to Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony wrote a poignant letter to New York fans.

A few years ago I dreamed of coming back to New York City, the place of my birth, and on February 23, 2011 that became a reality. This organization has supported me and in return, I want to stay and build here with this city and my team. At this pivotal juncture in my career, I owed it to myself and my family to explore all of the options available to me. Through it all, my heart never wavered.

During this journey I met with some quality organizations who have amazing talent and leadership. I thank them for their consideration, belief in my talent, and opportunity to imagine the possibilities.

I will always remember this chapter in my life. In the end, I am a New York Knick at heart. I am looking forward to continue my career in Orange & Blue and to work with Phil Jackson, a champion who builds championship teams. Madison Square Garden is the mecca of basketball and I am surrounded by the greatest fans in the world.

Via This is Melo.

Although the Knicks offered Carmelo a full max contract, they have worked out a deal to take less than the reported 5-year $129 million. For over a week, the discussion was going back n forth between New York, Chicago, Lakers, Houston, as well as others. However, one by one, Melo declined offers from the western conference teams.

Dallas doesn't get Carmelo Anthony, but they sign Chandler Parsons.

Anthony could have signed a deal on Thursday, but he waited to officially announce his decision until Sunday. The Chicago Bulls continued to make a serious push to acquire Carmelo, but the allure of a 2015 championship run in a new city wasn’t in the cards.

While people may see this as a money over rings argument, that case isn’t entirely true. It’s obvious that the Knicks underachieved for most of last season, but they are one year removed from a 54 win season and a second place finish in the Eastern Conference. There’s no guarantee that the Bulls would win with Carmelo in the fold, and there’s no guarantee that they can’t win without him.

Therefore, if you’re mad at Carmelo for staying in New York and Lebron James for leaving the Heat, you’re were likely going to be mad at any decision.

In his three full seasons since joining the Knicks in 2011, Carmelo Anthony has averaged slightly over 26 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. In 2014, Melo topped out at 27.4 points and 8.1 rebounds.

The Knicks will have a new look to go with some familiar faces, and with all of the upheaval in the east, New York will have a chance to challenge for the conference title next season. However, there may be more quality teams in 2015.

New York is Carmelo’s city, now he needs to win a championship to capture their whole heart.
