The art of the personal café is one that is not easy to master and as a business owner takes not just bravery in competing with the chain gangs, an investment of faith in the community and is nothing short of a labor of love, evident in two of Carlsbad’s newest café’s, Café Panini and Café Topes. Both café’s are new to the Village of Carlsbad, opening just south of the beaten pathway of Carlsbad Village Drive near the Boys and Girls Club yet are as distinct and unique as their offerings and environments.
Café Topes opened just a couple of weeks ago after what seemed like an eternity in the making. Finally open the patio area of Café Topes has been consistently occupied during the open hours of Tuesday through Sunday from 7am until 3pm. Aroma’s are part of the enticement of a cafe and there is no shortage of fresh baked goods at Café Topes, including their now "Famous Cinnamon Rolls". According to local legend, they are the best gooey goodness you’ll ever taste in the form of a roll! Serving up breakfast (all day long) and lunch, Café Topes menu may pleasantly surprise you, these people know hearty food! Full breakfast choices are generous, especially the Crack and Eggs, which is made with Burgundy Tri-tip from the local Seaside Market and eggs or the Mac’n Benedict made from king crab soaking in hollandaise over poached eggs with avocado on top! The lunch choices are available starting at 11am and there is everything from sandwiches , tacos and burritos (it wouldn’t be Carlsbad without some Mexican fare), to gourmet specialty burgers that are served on a pretzel bun, like the Sriracha or Triple Bypass, just to get your mouth drooling.

Café Panini opened a couple of weeks ago coincidentally as well and is an eclectic California cuisine café located on Oak Avenue next to the City of Carlsbad Utilities building. The new diagonal parking spaces installed throughout the village are also conveniently directly in front of Café Panini. There is easy access from the rail trail as well as ample bike parking . Defining itself still, Café Panini thinks outside of the lunch box with it’s informal and relaxed seating options, choices vary based on one’s mood. The outside patio area has undergone extensive renovations which feature intricate landscaping, rock pathways and a water fountain and fire pit in the front patio area. Serving both breakfast and lunch (sandwiches, wraps, salads and of course panini’s), as well as smoothies and a complete juice bar they also offer an extensive collection of craft brews. If you're looking for a great atmosphere and a snack there are appetizer plates to share (or not), like a hummus, cheese or veggie platter(s) where you can perhaps catch some live music at sunset. Ingredients are the central focus and you can taste the difference. Fresh, organic, healthy, scrumptious and nourishing are difficult to find all in one place, but here it is. It’s now open and called Café Panini.
