The large hexagonal building just off the I-5 at Tamarack Avenue has gone through a few owners in the last decade or so, yet the current British themed Pub & Grille referred to among some as just “The Stag” or officially named The Stag & Lion serves up grub, grog, and a spot of graciousness. In fact this Sunday, April 27th, The Stag & Lion will be the spot to be for Carlsbad locals who will gather in support of a fundraiser in the name of Aron Gunner from 2 pm until 7 pm. Sundays event proceeds will all go towards scholarships for outstanding, talented and deserving Carlsbad High School graduates (there is no shortage of these) like Aron was himself before he was killed in an auto accident back in 2012.
Multiple local bands are set to play, there will also be a silent auction and raffle prizes and a portion of the food and refreshments sold will also be donated by The Stag & Lion for this charitable cause. As described on their website, the “pub and grille is a community venue and is family friendly”, making Sunday a great day to get some great authentic, rich and hearty British fare and fun that the whole family will enjoy. The “3 Cheese Mac & Cheese” is sure to please the pickiest of eaters!
Bangers & Mash, Steak and Ale Pie (pie with steak and beer-seriously), Raisin Bread Pudding with Jack Daniels Glaze, more than 16 local craft brews on tap (over 20 bottled varieties), and huge wrap around fully stocked bar- “is it a club or a restaurant?” has been the on-going question.“The Stag and Lion is not a bar that serves food. We are an absolute grill with an emphasis on (high) quality,” the establishment claims, yet there is little denying that a lot of adult fun occurs in the “family” restaurant just off the beaten Carlsbad Village Crawl path.
Fun and games are more than welcome with 2 pinball machines, 2 pool tables and 2 dartboards-except on the professional pool team and dart league nights where it sometimes gets a bit serious. The Stag and Lion Pub & Grille also hosts the North County Ukulele Group on Thursdays and monthly dinners for the North County Rugby Team, and is always seeking more clubs and leagues as they have ample room for hosting large events.
The Stag & Lion is reminiscent of a yet to be discovered diner or dive, even taunting their own “Moby Dick Challenge” which includes more than a full pound of beer battered cod, over a pound of English Chips, a half pound of peas, and 5 hush puppies all of which must be devoured in 30 minutes or less-if accomplished your meal is free!
If you haven't popped in to The Stag & Lion yet, Sunday is a perfect time to give it a try, and support some great Carlsbad kids, actually, new adults. For more information about the menu or the Aron Gunner fundraiser you may contact The Stag & Lion by calling (760) 434-7824.
