Carleen Brice talks about LMN's Sins of the Mother and writing fiction

Sins of the Mother, based on Brice's novel Orange Mint and Honey, premieres on Lifetime Movie Network Sunday night, Feb. 21, starring Jill Scott, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Carleen Brice's book, Orange Mint and Honey, has been made into a Lifetime Movie Network movie called Sins of the Mother, starring Jill Scott. The movie premieres on LMN Sunday night, Feb. 21, at 8:00 p.m. ET and 5:00 p.m. PT.

Earlier today, the African-American Books Examiner interviewed Brice on BlogTalkRadio. The writer is both a novelist and successful blogger, and the discussion covered a variety of topics from her work style to mothers-daughter relations to ways in which writers can build their writing platforms online. She advises writers to start their platforms with their passion, whatever that is.

Brice agreed that the word "giddy" is one of the adjectives she'd used to describe her state of mind at seeing her characters come to life on the screen, and to that she added that she is "overwhelmed and shocked."  However, her excitement did not stop her from discussing some of the nuts and bolts of writing fiction such as how she approaches character development.

Brice finished school as a journalism major, and took creative writing courses later in preparation for writing fiction. She told the African-American Books Examiner that she's always loved fiction and is an avid reader. However her writing experience prior to Orange Mint and Honey and her more recent novel Children of the Waters was in nonfiction.

She's the author of Lead Me Home: An African American’s Guide Through the Grief Journey and editing Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number: Black Women Explore Midlife, but she turned her pen to fiction after the 911 disaster. That national tragedy made her realize that life is too short not to do what you love.

In the interview, Brice mentions a new book that she's currently writing. The title of that book is Calling Every Good Wish Home.

Great interview, Nordette. Excellent questions. Ms. Brice's reveal of her writing process and her inspiration was fascinating, as well as the discussions concerning mother-child relationships; a writer's self-promotion through blogging or other online presence; writing a query and securing an agent; what makes a successful writer and publication. Thank you. Success in both your endeavors!
