According to a Dec. 7 report from MMA Fighting, the strawweight title fight between Carla "Cookie Monster" Esparza (9-2) and undefeated Brazilian superstar Claudia Gadelha has been scrapped from Invicta FC 7 because the latter was hospitalized with a bacterial infection.
Two Title Fights Planned
"Claudia ran a high fever late Friday evening and went to the hospital where she was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in her intestines," Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp said. "We know Claudia wanted this title opportunity more than anything and all of us at Invicta wish her a speedy recovery.
"Tonight’s PPV will go on as planned with two world championship fights and a stacked undercard."
Gadelha tweeted a photo of herself with an IV in her arm following the Invicta FC 7 weigh-ins, but that tweet came shortly before she fell ill.
Invicta FC 7 will go on as planned with eight fights rather than the nine that had been scheduled.
Gadelha dropping off the card is bad news for the Brazilian, but for her opponent as well. Esparza was supposed to fight at Invicta FC 6, but she dropped off due to a knee injury. Invicta FC 7 marks the second-straight event where Esparza fell into some bad luck.
The Show Must Go On
Invicta FC flyweight champion Barb Honchak (8-2) will defend her title against three-time “Fight of the Night” winner Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith (6-3-1) in the main event of Invicta FC 7 and the inaugural Invicta FC bantamweight (135 pounds) world championship title will be on the line in a co-feature fight featuring knockout artist Lauren Murphy (7-0) against unbeaten rising star Miriam Nakamoto (2-0, 1 NC).
Also on the Invicta FC 7 main card, Bellator veteran Felice Herrig (114.5) battles hard-hitting Muay Thai ace Tecia "The Tiny Tornado" Torres (114).
