Yesterday, the NY Post reported that a man allegedly stole more than he'd intended when carjacking an SUV outside of a Bronx store. Patrick Julbe and Jennifer Rodriguez had stopped at a Boost Mobile around 6:18 p.m. to look at cellphone cases. Initially, only Julbe went inside, leaving Rodriguez and their 8 month-old daughter in the silver Jeep.
Julbe attempted showing his girlfriend a case through the window. Unable to see, she left the idling vehicle and entered the store, leaving their sleeping child in the back seat.
Surveillance video shows a heavy-set man wearing a black and white stripped shirt in jeans and a baseball cap approach the vehicle. He waits for a car to park before opening the unlocked door, climbing in, and backing up. Julbe made a futile attempt to run after the crook.
The thief didn't get very far before he realized he'd inadvertently kidnapped an infant. He kept the parents waiting while he abandoned the Jeep and traveled 40 minutes to upper Manhattan where he called 911.
“There's a baby in the back seat of the car,” he said. The spanish-speaking man told the 911 operator that he'd left the SUV two miles from the crime scene before a hasty hang-up.
Both the baby, Ayanna Julbe, and the vehicle were recovered unharmed at 7:40 p.m. As a precaution, the girl was taken to Montefiore Hospital for observation. The parents will not be charged, but must meet with child services to discuss the event. The carjacker is still at large.
