The Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA) will offer two free events for family caregivers this week in the East Bay. Both events feature local experts. Eldercare and Caregiving (Caregiving 101) will be offered on Wednesday, June 8 and There Must Be a Better Way Than This ! (Dementia 101) will be on Saturday, June 11.
Caregiving 101
This program will be held at Monarch Place, 4500 Gilbert Street in Piedmont, on Wednesday, June 8 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
This workshop presents an overview of issues faced by caregivers, from acknowledging that someone needs care to self-identifying as a caregiver. It also will focus on ways to handle stress and other issues faced by caregivers, including: navigating systems, getting respite care, finding support.
Keynote speakers for this event include: Donna Schempp, LCSW, Interim Program Director, Family Caregiver Alliance, and Anne Warner-Reitz, Executive Director, Adult Day Services Network of Alameda County.
Also included will be a panel discussion and resources for making care connections. Representatives of local senior services organizations will provide information about their programs and how these services fit into a continuum of care and support for people with early to advanced memory loss. Representatives will also speak about local and online caregiver services and resources.
This event is sponsored by BACS, ASEB and Monarch Place.
Dementia 101
This FCA program will be offered on Saturday, June 11 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at Pinole Senior Village Adult Day Care, 2850 Estates Avenue in Pinole.
This workshop is designed to increase participants understanding of dementia and what it means,
what the symptoms are, what the causes are, and how to deal with difficult behaviors that are a result of someone suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.
The keynote speaker for this event will be Donna Schempp, LCSW, Interim Program Director, Family Caregiver Alliance.

This national support organization for caregivers is located in San Francisco. The FCA offers invaluable services to caregivers locally and nationwide, including: advice, information, education and research.
