Career Profile: Laurie Huth, Instructional Design Professional

Laurie A. Huth of San Francisco Bay Area is a Change Manager and Instructional Designer with over 10 years experience in change management, training, and instructional design. Laurie's background is engineering. She has been involved in many Google implementations, ranging from 300 person companies to companies with over 20,000 employees. Her main objectives are to ensure the end users have all the tools they need to be successful, promote efficiency, and minimize any impact to the user community.
With a background in chemical engineering and 10 years experience as a process engineer, Laurie believes working with technicians and engineers has provided a solid foundation of technical understanding. I can 'speak the speak' and provide real world examples when working with students in the classroom. When asked what a typical day or work was like, Laurie shared the following:

"I meet with client to finalize the statement of work (SOW) and agree upon deliverables and milestones. Then comes the development of instructional materials, which may include tip sheets, online course development, webinars, training manuals, and instructor led training."

Laurie enjoys her work immensely and her professional aspiration is to continue working as an Instructional Designer and Change Manager. Over the course of her career, Laurie has helped students by " Actually making learning something new, less scary and more fun!" She finds it most rewarding to take highly complex processes and explain them in a way that makes sense to the end user. Laurie enjoys getting people excited and happy about the new process/technology. Passionate about her work, Laurie finds challenges are few or none.
We asked Laurie in what ways her education has prepared her for the job, and in what ways not:

"I am a bit of an anomaly - as I really don't know many people in training with my type of background. However, my engineering background has provided a solid foundation of technical understanding. I can 'speak the speak' and provide real world examples when working with students in the classroom. The degree is certainly advantageous at times, but certainly not required for this type of work."

On a lighter note Laurie visited "The bouncy castle" one day with a coworker after 3 weeks of 8 hour a day, 5 days a week training sessions. After each day, we would then drive 4 hours to the next training location and do it all again! Grueling! This photo was taken the last day of training - with Laurie and another trainer blowing off some steam!
