In the current troubling economic times, there are many under-employed professionals in Cleveland and nationwide. One would think that accepting a position making a lower salary would be a detriment, but many people are just happy to be employed at all. Libsohn describes that it is easier to find a job when you already have a job. One of the main points of the article is that it's easier to explain why you want a better job than it is to explain why you are unemployed. Taking a position with lower compensation as opposed to becoming (or remaining) unemployed, creates better odds for being able to move forward in your career.
What does this have to do with business development? In today's job market, hiring over-qualified individuals is a good strategy to increase the human capital of an organization. Although it may seem as though an over-qualified employee would move on, it's in an organization's best interest to promote from within. This strategy works well for both under-employed professionals, local organizations and eventually our local economy.
There is a dual purpose for this article. The first is to plant the seed with local organizations to refrain from being fearful of hiring employees that are capable of completing the job function, but have more experience than is necessary. At times it is necessary to hire based on the future needs of the organization. The second is to provide some insight to under-employed job seekers. There are times when it will be necessary to take a step backward before taking a step forward. It can be a humbling experience to accept a position with a lower salary, but it may be the opportunity needed to move further in your career path than you ever have in the past.
