Career fair follow up - when, where, and why

Job seekers who attended the Phoenix Career Fair can improve their chances of moving into an interview process by following up with potential employers.  So, when should you follow up, what are the best methods, and why do you need to follow up?

1.       You should follow up within 48 hours of any interaction with a prospective employer.

This includes people you meet at career fairs, networking events, professional groups, social functions, or anywhere else if the person could impact your career now or in the future.

2.       The best way to follow up depends on how and where you met the person.

Email is always an effective way to follow up, and if you know or think the person travels for their job, email will be the fastest way to communicate with them.  Handwritten notes are great as long as you know the person will receive the note in a timely manner.  A note written 3 weeks ago won’t have a big impact and if the person was starting an interview process, they most likely would have already chosen candidates by then.

3.       Follow up shows your professionalism and business acumen as well as your interest.

Regardless of the industry, having follow up skills are important.  By writing an email and/or note, you let the person know that you are truly interested and that you would like to continue to pursue opportunities with their organization.
