The Cardinals announced late Sunday that RHP Michael Wacha and LHP Jaime Garica have been placed on the 15-day DL and RHP Carlos Martinez will remain in the rotation for the time being. The team has announced today that RHP Eric Fornataro and SS Pete Kozma will take their roster spots.
Wacha has been battling a stress reaction in his right shoulder for his last 4 starts; the team did not believe it was a serious issue at first, but since the soreness has not subsided, they felt they need to shut the starter down. Wacha’s stint on the DL has been back dated to June 18th, his last start.
The Garcia injury is a little more concerning. Garcia missed a majority of last season after having surgery on his left shoulder and started this season on the DL while recovering. The injury could explain Garcia's last start, where he gave up 4 earned in 5 innings. If the “inflammation” could sideline the lefty for significant time, the team could look on the external market for pitching options. Garcia’s DL trip will be back dated to June 21st.
Fornataro has been promoted a few times this season; his month of June in Memphis has resulted in a 0.87 ERA and 3 saves over 8 games. Fornataro will work as a long reliever and mop up guy.
Kozma, the primary shortstop of the 2013 Cardinals, has hit lefties well in Memphis this season at a .295 clip with a .941 OPS. His overall line is less impressive (.234 average, 4 HR, 24 RBI). He'll only be bench depth, but does give the team a true replacement for Jhonny Peralta.
Fornataro will be assigned number 67 and Kozma will wear 68.
