In addition to adding Jorge Rondon to the bullpen and demoting Keith Butler, the Cardinals have also moved starter Joe Kelly to the 15-day DL and recalled reliever Eric Fornataro.
Kelly will miss at least 3 starts with a sprained hamstring; he was injured attempting to beat out a bunt in the 5th inning of Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to the Brewers. Kelly initially traveled to Washington D.C. with the team, but flew back to St. Louis Thursday morning.
The team elected to reinforce the bullpen before deciding on who will start Monday in New York. The team could either move Carlos Martinez into the rotation or recall another starter, most likely lefty Tyler Lyons; both pitchers were considered options for the 5th starter spot before Joe Kelly won the role. Martinez might be hard to move out of the bullpen, as he’s been one of the more reliable relief pitchers this season. Lyons started for Memphis on Wednesday, so he’d be on normal rest if he were promoted.
Fornataro has pitched well in Memphis this season, not allowing a run in 5 innings while only allowing a hit and a walk. He’s 1-0 with 1 save.
